Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have the following ready:

Step 1 - Section 1: Account and Authentication

Disable the Default Admin Account

Synology DSM:
Control Panel → User & Group → User → admin → Edit → Disable account
Create a new admin account with a non-obvious name first

QNAP:
Control Panel → Users → admin → Edit → Account enabled → Uncheck
Create a separate admin account first

TrueNAS:
Accounts → Users → edit root → Lock Account
Use a dedicated admin account instead

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Synology DSM:
Control Panel → Security → Account Protection → 2-Factor Authentication → Enforce for admin

QNAP:
Control Panel → 2-Step Verification → enable for admin group

TrueNAS SCALE:
Credentials → Users → edit user → Authentication → OTP Secret → Generate

Strong Password Policy

Synology - Control Panel → User → Advanced → Password Strength Rules
  - Minimum 16 characters
  - Require uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special characters
  - Exclude username from password
  - Password history: 5

QNAP - Control Panel → Security → Password Policy

Step 2 - Section 2: Enable Disk Encryption

Disk encryption protects data if the NAS is physically stolen. Without it, drives pulled from the chassis are fully readable.

Synology Volume Encryption

Synology DSM:
Storage Manager → Volume → Create → choose encryption
  - Encryption key: stored in Synology Secure Erase key manager
  - Or: use USB key to unlock on boot

For existing volumes (requires data migration):
Back up all data
Destroy volume → recreate with encryption → restore data

Check encryption status
Storage Manager → Volume → select volume → Details → Encryption: Enabled

QNAP Volume Encryption

QNAP QTS:
Storage & Snapshots → Storage → create pool → Enable Encryption
Key management - QNAP key manager (AES-256)

Lock volumes manually:
Storage & Snapshots → Storage → Secure → Lock
Requires unlock key on next boot

TrueNAS (ZFS Encryption)

TrueNAS SCALE - enable dataset encryption via UI
Storage → Pools → Add Dataset → Encryption: Enabled
Encryption Type - Key (recommended), or Passphrase

Via CLI:
zfs create -o encryption=on -o keyformat=passphrase -o keylocation=prompt pool/encrypted-dataset

Check encryption status
zfs get encryption,keystatus pool/encrypted-dataset

Load key on boot
zfs load-key pool/encrypted-dataset
zfs mount pool/encrypted-dataset

Step 3 - Section 3: Network Hardening

Firewall Rules

Synology DSM:
Control Panel → Security → Firewall → Enable Firewall
  Create rules:
  - Allow - specific LAN IPs that need NAS access (e.g., 192.168.1.0/24)
  - Allow: your management IP only for port 5000/5001 (web UI)
  - Deny: all other inbound connections

QNAP:
Control Panel → Security → Security Level → Custom mode
  Add rules: only allow your LAN subnet

TrueNAS:
Network → Global Configuration → set interfaces
System → General → GUI SSL certificate

Disable Unnecessary Services

Services to check and potentially disable:

Synology:
Control Panel → Terminal & SNMP → enable SSH only if needed
Control Panel → File Services → disable AFP (legacy Mac, deprecated)
Control Panel → File Services → disable NFS unless needed
Package Center → disable QuickConnect if not using remote access

QNAP:
Control Panel → Network Services → disable Telnet (always)
Control Panel → Network Services → disable UPnP port forwarding
MyQNAPcloud → disconnect from cloud if not using

Disable UPnP

UPnP lets devices automatically open ports on your router. including your NAS. Disable at both the NAS and router level:

Synology - Control Panel → External Access → Router Configuration → Disable UPnP
QNAP - Control Panel → Network Services → Service Binding → disable UPnP
Router - Admin interface → disable UPnP (varies by router)

Step 4 - Section 4: Disable Cloud Relay Features

QuickConnect (Synology) and myQNAPcloud create persistent tunnels to manufacturer servers, making your NAS reachable from the internet through their relay. Disable unless you specifically need remote access.

Synology - Control Panel → QuickConnect → Disable QuickConnect
QNAP - myQNAPcloud App → disable or unpublish services

For legitimate remote access, use a VPN instead:

Synology - VPN Server package → WireGuard or OpenVPN
QNAP - VPN Client/Server → WireGuard
TrueNAS - Services → OpenVPN/WireGuard → configure

Step 5 - Section 5: Enable Audit Logging

Synology DSM:
Log Center → install from Package Center
Settings → Log Center → Archive rules → enable
View - Log Center → Connection → all login attempts, file accesses

QNAP:
System Logs → enable
Event Logs → enable
Security level - High (logs all access)

TrueNAS:
System → Audit → enable all audit categories

Monitor for Brute Force Attempts

Synology:
Control Panel → Security → Account Protection
  - Enable account protection
  - Block after 5 failed attempts in 5 minutes
  - Block duration: 30 minutes

QNAP:
Control Panel → Security → IP Access Protection
  - Enable
  - Threshold: 5 failed logins
  - Block for: 24 hours

Step 6 - Section 6: Backup and Snapshots

A compromised or ransomware-hit NAS is only recoverable if you have backups it can’t reach:

TrueNAS - ZFS snapshots (immutable, ransomware-resistant)
Periodic Snapshot Tasks → create hourly/daily/weekly tasks
Snapshots can't be deleted by the OS. only from TrueNAS admin

Synology - Snapshot Replication package
Package Center → Snapshot Replication → install
Set schedule - daily, retain 30 days

External backup (2nd copy, off-NAS)
Synology Hyper Backup → backup to external USB or remote
Target - encrypted external drive (kept offline)

Verify backups work
Restore a test file from a 30-day-old snapshot monthly

Step 7 - Section 7: Keep Firmware Updated

Synology - Control Panel → Update & Restore → Check for updates
Enable - Automatically install important updates

QNAP - System → Firmware Update → Check for Updates
QNAP has had critical vulnerabilities exploited in the wild (2021, 2022)
Keep firmware current. this is not optional

TrueNAS - System → Update → Check for Updates

Verify update signatures (TrueNAS):
TrueNAS verifies update packages automatically
Check - System → General → Version

Step 8 - Verify Your Hardening

From an external machine on your LAN, port scan your NAS
nmap -sV 192.168.1.x
Expected - only ports you intentionally opened should respond

Check for NAS exposed to internet (if you have a firewall/router)
nmap -sV your.public.ip.address
Nothing from your NAS should appear here

Test 2FA - log out, attempt login, verify OTP prompt appears

Test account lockout - enter wrong password 5+ times
Verify the account locks as configured

Review audit log for any unexpected access
Look for - access from unexpected IPs, after-hours access, bulk file reads

Troubleshooting

Configuration changes not taking effect

Restart the relevant service or application after making changes. Some settings require a full system reboot. Verify the configuration file path is correct and the syntax is valid.

Permission denied errors

Run the command with sudo for system-level operations, or check that your user account has the necessary permissions. On macOS, you may need to grant terminal access in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

Connection or network-related failures

Check your internet connection and firewall settings. If using a VPN, try disconnecting temporarily to isolate the issue. Verify that the target server or service is accessible from your network.
